night, when she'd had too much to drink, Eve told
me that sex with Henry, who was reputed to be an
expert in that field, was - well, he'd get a little
wine in him after dinner, then he'd leap on her. It
lasted about a minute. Then it was all over. By the
time he came to Big Sun the good life with artist
friends, not sex, was his main interest.

Henry had arranged to meet young Caryl Hill, a
J Festival. He admitted, during an interview in
1 Cannes, what he had told me - that he
fictionalized a lot of his life. Why not? Made it
more interesting to read. He made an art of his
life in more ways than one.
When Eve and Henry were breaking up, Eve
told me that Henry liked to go up to Monterey to
Greek restaurants and movies. One time, she went
to Monterey, without Henry, to see a film herself.
When the lights went on, she found herself sitting
right next to Henry and a woman friend!

and married his next door neighbor,
Harrydick Ross, she came down to
Nepenthe with Harrydick and had some
drinks. Harrydick told me that when they
went to bed that night, he rolled over to put his
arms around her and found that he was embracing
a corpse!
She'd had a cardiac and just died. The word was
out that she'd drunk a quart of gin. I don't know.
They were at my bar, but I couldn't verify how
much she drank. She could get pretty drunk.
Jesus, she was a beautiful girl! Like Lepska, she
was a lot younger than Henry. Eve had some
affairs in Big Sur herself.
You know, I've thought a lot about what Eve

after-dinner ritual. It seems that he was just
interested in getting laid and going to sleep while
he was in Big Sur.

satisfying. Probably, in his earlier years, he was
more of what, today, we would call a technician.
Love? I believe Henry wanted the unconditional
love of a mother, not the love of a female friend
and mate. A lot of men like Henry try to
manipulate a woman to get the mothering they
want. Then the woman has an emotional baby on
her hands. If she doesn't give him the kind of love
he wants, he leaves her.
I see the problem of the modern woman as how
to break that spell of testing and leaving.
Very few men realize how much they need the
help of a woman to find their souls. They think
they just want sex or mothering. But finding the
soul is what it's all about.
As for me, I believe sex should be savored,
special. It should be a celebration of a mutually
satisfying, understanding, spirited relationship -
what champagne is to other kinds of celebrations.
You have to resist sex now and then to make it
special, just as you don't want to banalize
champagne by drinking it daily. You have to watch
out that you don't let sex - or love of champagne
- dominate you.
Sex dominated much of Henry's life, not love or
friendship with women, except, maybe, with that
French writer who wouldn't marry him, Anais Nin.
