VOL 30 NO 2 NEWSLETTER THE CHINA LAKER Hewlett-Packard Company President’s Message by Dr Bob Smith Jun 2025 Greetings, The 23rd annual China Lake Museum Foundation Dinner Auction, was held on Saturday, 10 May, and was very successful. We raised money, while attendees enjoyed participating in the many events offered, talking to old friends, meeting new ones, and of course dinner. We are thankful for our staff, and volunteers, who worked incredibly hard to make this event successful, and to you who participated. Thank You! The STEAM Discovery Center Annex recently passed final inspection. We can now hold classes, lectures, and events that are related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math in the building. A few things remain to be completed before we hold classes, including, installing a large TV, white boards, mounting interior security cameras, and assembling shelves, and cabinets. Our first class will be an Art class taught by Fawn Martinez, our Gift Shop manager. Fawn has taught Art for young children for many years. Following the Art class, we will have classes in Navigation, and Rockets. The Navigation class will be tailored to the students’ age, increasing in complexity from following a map to GPS navigation. The Rockets class will include Newton’s laws of motion, and provide hands-on experiments with water rockets. We want all our classes to be unique, and provide hands-on activities. The T-39 Saberliner was moved onto the cement aircraft pad near the southeast corner of the Exhibit Hall. The T-39 will face northeast so the entry steps will be close to the Exhibit Hall. The two new aircraft pads were donated by Henzel Phelps, one of the NAWS earthquake reconstruction contractors. We had a surprise visit by 40 members of a Rocket Club from Poland. They were here to complete in a contest being held at the “Friends of Amature Rocketry” site, south of Garlock road. They won the contest! They purchased many items in the Gift Shop, including caps with “Rocket Scientist” on them. In fact, they bought ALL of the caps we had in stock! Thank You! I will have more details about the Rocket Club from Poland in the next Newsletter. As I toured them through our small exhibit area, they asked many great questions. One was “Why are the control surfaces of the Sidewinder (Canards) in the front of the missile, and the control surfaces of the Shrike missile in the middle of the missile?” That is a great question.
