new compounds which would
decompose at lower temperature and
still have enough vapor pressure to be
useful for production-scale manufac-
ture of mercury cadmium wlluride.
Higa has snythesized more than a
dozen new compounds of tellurium
and cadmium and has filed four
patents. In two years, these com-
pounds have gone from research
ideas to commercial products.
After receiving his award, Riga
said, "I think a lot of credit is due to
Dave Harris and Bob Schwartz
because they gave me the latitude to
change the direction ofthe research to
the area I felt had the greatest poten-
tillI- new source compounds for the
metal organometallic chemical vapor
deposition of me-
tallic precursors from which films of
mercury cadmium telluride were
