LANDACRE, Paul Hambleton (1893-1963).
Wood engraver, illustrator. Born in Columbus,
OH on July 9, 1893. While a student at Ohio
State University, Landacre contracted a
streptococcus infection which left him crippled
for life. Upon graduation in 1916 he relocated to
the milder climate of southern California. He
soon began his career in a San Diego advertising
agency and about 1922 settled in Los Angeles
where he remained. In 1926 he quit his job as a
commercial artist to concentrate on printmaking.
Landacre taught wood engraving at Otis Art
Institute until his suicide on June 3, 1963. He
was the author-illustrator of several books
including California Hills. Rockwell Kent once
called him "the best American wood engraver

LANDAKER, Harold Charles (1892-1966).
Painter, ceramist. Born in Ohio on Dec. 12,
1892. Landaker studied at the AIC. At that school
he met his wife-to-be, Mabel Holtz. For 15
years the couple were part of a circus. Harold
painted posters and wagon carts as well as
designing sets and costumes for the circus folks
and animals. For awhile the couple managed the
Fun House which must have been exciting for
their two youngs sons. In 1940 Harold traveled
to southern California to do posters for the
Orange Show. Opting to remain, he joined the art
department at MGM. In 1946 the family moved to
the Monterey Peninsula and settled in Pacific
Grove where they became active in the local art
scene. With whimsical humor, Harold depicted
animais, circus life, and birds; later in life he
turned to landscape painting and was heavily
involved with electronics. He died in Monterey,
CA on Nov. 6, 1966. Member: Carmel AA.

LANDAKER, Mabel Beatrice Holtz (1902-
1998). Painter, ceramist. Born in Chicago, IL
on June 11, 1902. While enrolled at the AIC,
Mabel met artist Harold Landaker whom she wed
in 1920. She and her husband were members of
a circus for 15 years before moving to California
in 1940. She settled on the Monterey Peninsula
in 1946 and lived in Pacific Grove until her
demise on Jan. 29, 1998. Exh: Carmel AA from

etcher. Born in Winnsboro, TX on Feb. 18, 1907.
Landers studied at the ASL of NYC and Colorado
Springs Fine Arts Center. While based in Dallas,
she was active in California in the 1 930s and
later settled there. A spinster, she died in San
Diego, CA on March 25, 1996. Exh: Oakland Art

1853. Nora Landers studied at the NAD where
she won the bronze Elliott medal. Shortly aft@ r
the turn of the century, she moved to San Diego
and built a cottage called "The Modjeska" in La
Jolla on La Jolla Avenue. Some of her paintings
were done on leftover shingles from the
construction.
She was active in the local art
scene and one of the original members of the La
Jolla Art Ass'n in 1919. Landers died in San
Diego on April 20, 1950. Exh: San Diego AA,
