Matthew‘T. Pope Matthew Thomas Pope, age 33, is presumed dead after his fishing vessel, the disap- peared over the January 26 week- end. He was the skipper of the vessel, and is believed to have gone down with his ship, along with his six crew members. Mr. Pope was born on Febru» ary 14, 1962 in Mount Vernon iand grew up in Bellevue and Al» yn. He began his fishing career in 1980 at the age of 17, and had be- come a highly respected crab fish- erman in Alaska. He met his wife, Pamela, in Seattle, and they were married on November 28, 1987. Pope belonged to the American Market Association, the Alaska Fishing Conservation Group, the Alaska Crab Coalition, and vari- ous other safety organizations He was also active in motocross. Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his mother, Judith 0. Pope of Bellevue. He is survived by his Wife, Pamela; sons, Max- well age 6, and Spencer, age 21 months; sisters, Cheryl Paup and her husband, Andrew, and Cindy Cornell and her husband, Jim; brothers, Russell and Dennis Cleveland; parents, Tom Pope of Issaquah, and Tom and Merideth Cleveland of Allyn; grandmother, Blanche Rhodes; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Pamela Pope, wife of the mas- ter of the Pacesetter, received a call from the United States Coast Guard at 11:30 pm. Saturday, January 27, notifying her that the Pacesetter’s emergency locator had been activated. She imme- diately began trying to contact her husband by telex while also contacting other boats in the area. Another vessel located the emergency beacon, life raft and buoy at approximately 1 am. Sunday morning. Rescue efforts were begun immediately by the Coast Guard, as well as by other boat crews in the area. At 3 am, the other life raft was recovered. One Coast Guard cutter remained on the scene to continue the search. The Pacesetter was equipped with the most up-to-date emer- gency equipment available. Be- fore going out, Pope and the crew spent time participating in safety classes and drills. Pope’s crew consisted of very experienced fish- ermen who had prior history fish- ing with him in the Bering Sea, his wife said. The Pacesetter left Dutch Har- bor, Alaska, to begin the snow crab season on Saturday, January 27, after being delayed by a strike. The price they were being paid for crab had been cut in half from the previous year. Because the Tyson company did not honor the strike, it was imperative the privatelypwned boats begin fish- ing to insure they received a fair share of the catch. Matthew Pope was 33 years old.
