Dr. Fisher died at 6 o'clock in his Carmel Valley home, following a succession of heart attacks. Apparently in the best of health, with no past cardiac history, he was first stricken a week ago, but rallied after a brief hospitalization. His wife, Anne Fisher, noted author of "Cathedral in the Sun," and other works, had returned from a visit to her ailing mother in the San Francisco Bay area when word reached her of his first attack, and was with him when he died. Celebrated alike in the fields of science and art, Dr. Fisher was prized by his many friends as a man of sterling integrity, possessing the twin gifts of humility and humor. He was born Feb. 1, 1878, in Ossining, N.Y., son of Albert Kenrick Fisher, also a distinguished scientist and one of the two men who founded the U.S. Biological Survey. As a science student, Walter Fisher attended Stanford University, receiving his bachelor's degree in 1901, his M.A. in 1903, and his Ph.D. in 1906. From 1897 to 1901 he served as a special field naturalist, with the U.S. Biological Survey in Washington, D.C. and in 1902 began his long association with the Stanford University faculty, rising from assistant in zoology to full professorship during the years 1925-1943, retiring in the latter year. From 1917 to his retirement Dr. Fisher served as director of the Hopkins Marine Laboratory, Stanford's Pacific Grove station, and with his wife, the former Evelyn Anne Benson of Denver, Colo., whom he married here in 1922, madea home at 844 Laurel Ave. In recent years the couple also maintained a home in Carmel Valley. Dr. Fisher was one of the freeholders who called the first charter convention for the City of Pacific Grove and continued to take an active interest in civic affairs. Following his retirement he served as a research associate with the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C. and was working on various collections for the National Museum at the time of his http://www.cagenweb.com/montereybbs/viewtopic.php?t==1861&sid=b8e62c3757d8d8e52... 8/10/2010 Nt.f , OCR Text: CAGenWeb Monterey County Genealogy :: View topic - Fisher, Walter Kenrick 1878-19...
