Dear Ms. Burgess,
The Heritage Society ofPacific Grove recently conducted research on the above referenced property.
Please integrate this letter and accompanying documents into the City's official property files in your
department, as we believe it to be significant to the historicity ofthis property and its structures.
The current description for this APN is the Pacific Grove Acres Subdivision, Lot 6 and the North half of
Lot 7 ofBlock 318 and Lots 7 and 8 in block 317.
According to the County Assessor Tax Files, tax for improvement to the property was first assessed in
thetaxyear 1925-1926 inthe amount of$2,000.00. This would indicate the structure was completed in
either late 1925 or early 1926. The owner at the time was listed as Amy Bowen Hittell. During the tax
year 1928-1929 in Block 318, Lots 3 and 4 were changed to Lots 6 and 7 respectively. The structures for
this address are located on the property within Block 318. The original address was 240 Asitomar
Avenue. (See Attachment A)
According to the 1926 Assessor map ofPacific Grove Acres, Dr. Amy Bowen Hittell and her husband
Charles Jacob Hitteli were the owners of seven lots, six ofwhich run contiguous between Asilomar
Avenue and what is now Sunset Avenue. The street name changed from Ocean View to Sunset in1926.
Two of the lots are in Block 318 fronting Ailomar, fourofthe lots are in Block 317 fronting Sunset,
and the seventh lot is directly across on the west side of Sunset in Block 331, across from the Hittells'
other properties. The width ofthis seventh lot was equivalent to the width ofthe four lots on the east
side ofthe street. Today this seventh parcel is part ofthe State Park system. A structure is visible in
Block 318 on the 1926 Assessors Map (see Attachment B).
A search ofDeed Titles reveals that in 1923 Amy Bowen Hittell bought one ofthe lots in Block 318 (see
Attachment C) and that Paul and Mamie Ehlert bought the other one (see Attachment D) from Del
Monte Properties. Then in 1924 Amy Bowen Hittell bought the Ehtert lot (see Attachment E). Amy
Bowen Hittell sold all seven parcels to Mr. and Mrs. King in 1943. These transactions and the Kings'
