Douglas W Cook, Vice Commander ofthe Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, and Roger Heinisch, of Allian! Tech Sys- .tems, recently signed a cooperative research and development agreement to develop injection loading technology. While the.acronym for cooperative research and develop- ment agreement used to be "CRDA," it bas recently changed to "CRADA," noted MaMa Harrington, from the Commer- cial Application & Transfer Office at China Lake. Alliant is involved in production loading of munitions and weapons development, while the China Lake site of NAWCWPNS is involved in the development of explosive formulations for munitions, Harrington said. AlIiant's home office is in Edina, Minn. Various programs have been investigating alternate explo- sive fills in munitions to help meet Navy insensitive muni- tions requirements, noted Tim Mahoney, a scientist in the Ordnance Systems Depanment. These alternative fills have been plastic bonded explosives, which, unlike the currently used melt·cast explosives, do not flow readily, he explained. They have to be pushed or injected. Therefore, the China Lake site of NAWCWPNS has been developing ways to load these explosives by using injection loading technology. "This new technology is much faster and more reliable than what we are now using," stated Chuck Newmyer, bead of the Industrial Liaison Office at China Lake. "It will belp many, if not all, oC our programs we (the Navy) have." In 1985, Gordon Fawkes, a chemical engineer at China Lake, designed the bench·scale injection loader. In 1986, another injection loader was built by Mahoney, wbo has been, and still is, modifying and operating it. Two days of filming at China Lake and one day at Point Mugu will result in features about both Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Divi· sion facilities airing on the weekly program sent to the world-wide Navy community. 10I Quinton Lyton and PH2 Ken McK- ether, assigned to the Navy Broadcasting Ser· vice in Washington, D.C. filmed men and women from NAWCWPNS, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Five (VX-5) and the Marine Aviation Detachment on the job, sup- poning the fleet. The Navy News This Week videotape goes to all Navy installations and ships. Segments featuring China Lake are expected to air in mid-April. The NAWCWPNS Point Mugu site will be featured in a later broadcast. Among the China Lake stories included by the news team are interviews with members of the Parachute Test Branch in the Range Depanment's Recovery Systems Division, sailors from VX-5's Powerline Division (the only such division in a Navy squadron) and the NAWS China Lake Petroglyphs on the nonh ranges. Lyton is one of the Washington-based anchor reponers. This was his first visit to the West Coast as pan of the Navy News This Week team: Cameraman McKether, like Lyton, has 10 years in the Navy.
