Mark Manke killed in
collision early Sunday
Mark Charles Manke, 17, 307
West G Street, Shelton, was killed
in a two-car collision on the
Arcadia Road about half-a-mile
east of Highway 101 early Sunday
morning.
Manke was the driver of a car
which, according to the
Washington State Patrol which
investigated the accident, went
into broadside skid while
westbound and was involved in a
collision with a car coming
eastbound.
The driver of the other vehicle
involved was John E. Howe Jr.,
24, Route 3, Box 182, Shelton.
According to the patrol,
Manke was westbound and
Crossed over into the eastbound
lane and then went into a
broadside skid. The eastbound
Howe vehicle, the patrol said,
struck the Manke vehicle on the
driver’s door. The Manke youth
was thrown from the vehicle.
Howe suffered lacerations to
his chin and on both sides of his
forehead and a puncture wound
in the back of his left leg, the
patrol said. A passenger in his
vehicle, Merrilee Stewart, 18,
Route 5, Box 695, Shelton,
suffered possible back injuries and
minor lacerations,
There were four passengers in
the Manke vehicle, the patrol said.
Mark Sollock, 18, 126 East E
Street, Shelton, suffered
lacerations to his temple. Harry
Baeten, 23, 111 East Railroad,
Shelton, suffered a broken collar
bone and minor lacerations.
Charles Chamberlin, 18, PO. Box
275, Shelton, suffered an injury
to his left knee. Randy Freeman,
16, Route 5, Box 288, Shelton,
was uninjured in the accident.
All of those injured were
taken to Mason General Hospital
for treatment.
Mark Manke was born March
26, 1956 in Shelton and had lived
here all of his life. He was a junior
at Shelton High School at the
time of his death.
Survivors include his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Manke,
Shelton; one sister, Holly,
Shelton; one brother, Joel,
Shelton; his grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. Elmer Manke, Shelton, and
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Edwards,
Hoodsport.
Funeral services were held at
11 a.m. Tuesday in the United
Methodist Church with Reverend
William Andrews officiating.
Burial was in Shelton Memorial
Park.
