VOL 27 NO 1 The China Laker Hewlett-Packard Company President’s Message by Bob Campbell Mar 2022 Last week we had a very successful unveiling of our new China Lake Museum’s “Hidden Histories” series of lectures, with the informative presentation by Scott O’Neil on the Vertical Launch ASROC story. The objective of the series is to share with the next generation of China Lakers some of the stories and hidden history portraying “The China Lake Way”----Strong technical competence and a willingness to take risks and fight for the adoption of new capabilities. Charlie May is working on the next lecture which will feature HARM and complement his earlier SHRIKE presentation that Mark Pahuta recorded. We will be providing opportunities to view the recorded series in the future. I want to thank our Annual Members, as most have successfully switched to pay membership by calendar year and we are calling the rest since we treasure your membership. The NOTSNIK article included in this Newsletter was penned by Jeff Scott, and I thought provided a worthwhile technical update for all of us. It has been covered in Liz Babcock’s book “Magnificent Mavericks” volume 3 of the China Lake History Series, and I recommend you dust off Liz’s book and learn more of the very interesting “"rest of the story”. You will learn that NOTSNIK did have an objective to gather data on the ionospheric effects of a high-altitude nuclear experiment funded through ARPA. Frank St George, one of the passionate and founding Directors of the CLMF, was the only person who reported hearing the NOTSNIK “beep”. He was manning the tracking station set up by NOTS at Christchurch, New Zealand. He shared with us that his recorder was off at the time, as he had been informed that the launch was a failure. So, not formally confirmed, now you and I know NOTSNIK was the first US satellite to orbit earth! Please note the dinner and art walk “Save the Date” scheduled for May 14th. This should be an interesting networking and fund raising event we believe you all will enjoy. Also there will be a celebration of Life in honor of Henry Blecha at the Museum March 27th @ 2pm. Henry provided many of the model airplanes in the Sidewinder Exhibit hall on the Base. All of these models will be moved to the new Museum once it is completed. Hope to see you there. 130 E.
