Transcribing an ances- tors diaries can be quite an eye opening procedure. I am doing just such a thing. My great-grandmother kept a diary/journal for most of her married life. Several of these appear to be lost, or with a different branch of the family. I’m work- ing on her last diary (working backwards) in this time period she loses her husband, works through the loss, decides which of her four children to live close to, starts a new life as an 80 year old widow, and then finally to battle and lose her life to colon cancer. She decided to live next door to my grand- parents. My mother as a widow with 4 young children, spent quite a lot of time at her par- ents. I would spend hours talking to great- grandma, huddled in the small spare room, looking through draw- ers of pictures. She is the root of my genea- logical quest. I have always wanted to know more about those peo- ple in the pictures. The picture of the “Chicken’s Funeral”, Why did that one man insist on standing in the middle of the large flower bush for his pic- ture and who is he? Grandma’s diary is showing me an adults view of my childhood memories. I am also finding a wealth of ge- nealogical information as well. The following are excerpts from her diary: 1967, September 7: Thurs. Rennee wrote that Gertie died. She was in a hospital for a month. She was 89. Just Edith + I left of the 4 Carver brothers wives. 1967, October 13: Fri. I looked for Gene + Lucille but they sent a pkg. for my birthday. Helen, Lou + Bev, went to Edith’s in Longview. In eve. Bev had a party for Kathy + for me also. All the family of rela- tives. I didn’t know the party was for me too. How- ever, if it is an older monitor, and if you are using a film camera, the shutter speed should be set to 1/30 of a second to match the scan rate of the moni- tor. As well, the use of a flash should be avoided since the burst of light could be re- flected by the screen and the photo wouldn't "take." Before shooting, check for reflections from overhead lights (or of yourself) on the screen, so that the pic- ture is as clear as pos- sible. J.
