To: City of Pacific Grove 27 January 1986 Planning Department 300 Forest Av Attn: Mr Bob Tiernan I am truly sorry there has been so much misunderstanding about my remodeling of the existing bathroom/laundry area at 306 Park Street. Much of the confusion, along with the late application for a building permit, was certain- ly my fault. I have had an overload teaching assignment at Monterey Peninsula College in December and January that has required my absence from my own neighborhood literally from dawn to dusk for many days. Meanwhile, I had asked Danny Lawson, my daughter's friend and my own, to repair a leaking roof on this part of the house at 306. When he told me, quite correctly, that the whole room was in such poor shape that a simple repair job would not be feasible, I told him to go ahead with whatever had to be done to remedy the situation. At that time, I had planned to ask the building contractor for whom Danny regularly works to oversee the work and plan-drawings. But it was at that same time that the wife of the contractor died, quite unexpectedly, and his family and personal business made him un- available. Co-incidentally, I also realized that I would have to stop Danny's project anyways because I had overrun my budget for maintenance and repair during the 1985 tax year. The problem became compounded when I learned there had been complaints about the raising of the roof line on the room, which resulted in a changed exterior appearance, leading someone to imagine that there was an addition involved. News of the complaint seemed odd to me, because I could not--and cannot now--understand any of my neighbors' preferring to look, at a damaged, peeling, substandard roof set at an inefficient pitch on a deteriorating substructure rather than at a new roof brought to the same pitch as the roof on the rest of the house. And I dismissed the whole matter from mind when no objection was raised at the Architectural Review Board hearing. Only quite recently, after inquiring about the status of the permit application and pre- paring to re-start the work, I was informed of further confusion: it has somehow been conjectured that more than one family occupies.the house. This is even more curious than the objection to the appearance of the roof, or the suspicion of a new addition. I have owned the property at 302/304 Park Street fornearly twenty years, and at no time during that period have I observed the house at 306 being put to any use but that of a single- family dwelling. Since I acquired the contiguous lot in 1980, my only renter has been my daughter, Beth Penney, who lives there, and who has been helping me upgrade the pro- perty, slowly but persistently. We plan eventually to remove, in whole or part, a storage shed, most of which is in such poor condition as to be beyond saving. (I shall hope, at . that time, that no neighbor will have become so attached to the sight of this shed that he or she will try to obstruct my receiving permission to raze it.) As further reassurance to anyone needing it, I add that I have lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 1953, and before moving to Pacific Grove, owlied a home in Carmel. During my years as a news editor for the Pine Cone and staffer semi-regularly for the Herald, I had occasion to sit through many planning sessions in this area, with perhaps more interest in the proceedings than most journalists would have. Three of my four children and two of my step-children were born here, and all attended public schools here. I shall soon have a grandchild growing up here. No one couid be more concerned than I with the quali- ty of life in this area, especially that in the residential neighborhoods of Pacific Grove. Because of this long-term interest of mine, which is certainly shared by my daughter, we urge anyone who has doubts or questions about what we are doing with the house at 306 to fe to inspect the premises. Beth can be reached to make arrangements for this at after 5:30 p. most days, and I at 372-0113 from 5 p. after 31 January, when the wintersession ends at MPC. cc: Mr Leonard Morris, Mr L. F.
