CLPL's gas station closes for repairs/renovation of equipment
China Lake Propulsion LaboralOry's gas station will be
closing for an extended period of time to allow for repairs
and renovation of the fuel dispensing equipment When
the presently stocked fuel at CLPL is dispensed, the sta-
tion will be closed. This should occur on approximately
Aug. IS.
Those people who normally obtain fuel at the CLPL
station can use either the station located in front of Public
Works, the one located at lOB, or the one at NAF.
If you have any questions regarding the closure, con-
tact Nancy Rodgick or Vicki McEnteein, Public Works, at
NWC ext. 1143 or 1205 (Code 2671).
Intermediate markdowns may have been taken.

Peo.ple are best asset
First night FSAT
flight successful
China Lake's best asset, its peo-
ple came through again. A China
Lake team made the technical and
procedural changes necessary to
make the ftrst night time flight of
a full scale aerial target (FSAT)
late last month.
Personnel from the Aircraft
Deparunent's Engineering Support
Division, the Range Department
and the Center's two civilian
remote control pilots all played
vital roles in this ftrst night FSAT
presentation at China Lake
IntensifIed low-llght camera
permIts night flights In any
kind of lighting
When the Air Force had a
requirement for night missile
launches against full scale targets,
the program office called China
Lake because there was no such
night flight capability on their
own ranges. After some thought
and investigation, the decision
was made to go ahead. As a result,
an Air Force F-15E Eagle flfed an
AIM-9 Sidewinder at one of
NWC's QF-4 PhanlOm target air-
craft on the moonless night of
June 27.
Al Sorensen of the Tracking
and Control Branch was credited
with the engineering effort that
made the new capability possible.
Sorensen, in disucssing the pro-
ject, said the hardest part was
acquiring new television cameras
to mount on the target aricraft. It
took several months, and the
excellent cooperation of the Cen-
ter's Procurement Department, to
take delivery of these specialized
cameras.
The light gathering capability
of the intensifted low-light camera
is so good, it allows the remOle
pilot, sitting in the Range Control
Center, to see things a safety pilot
iR the target's cockpit could not,
such as beacons from aircraft fiy-
ing in the Lancaster area.
John Haynes, head of.the Track
and Control Branch, said this
development was a "significant
new capability at NWC." For now,
China Lake offers the only night
FSAT capability in the countrY.
Once the cameras were
acquired, modiftcation of the air-
c....
aft took little time since the n~w
cameras were so similar in size to
the cameras used for daylight
operations on the QF-4 and QF-
86.
For most people involved with
this project the only difference in
tasks they performed was the time
of day involved. Only the pilots,
noted Mike Kaspar of the Target
Systems Section, had a really dif-
ferent environment Kaspar added
it took Wayne Greene, the setup
pilot, and the section personnel a
litUe longer to prepare the Phan-
tom, but only because of the time
of day, not because the mission
requirements were any different.
While extra caution was used
because of the need to work at
night, Bob Whisman in the Target
Systems Section said it was really,
"business as usual, it all went
smoothly for us," as they installed
the destruct package.
In the RCC ground control sta-
tion Norman Osman said, "It's an
