Jack Witt Named
The Blueiacket
For This Month
The man chosen as NOTS'
"Bluejacket of the Month" for
October, A02 Jack D. Witt of
NAF, tells a story about his
first experience with the des-
ert community of China Lake
that should ring a bell with
many a sailor and civilian of
NOTS.
A02 Jack Witt serves as pet-
ty officer in charge of missile
assembly and loading crews in
NAF's Missile Shop, and came
to NOTS in I ate February,
1966, from duty aboard the
USS Shangri-la in the Mediter-
ranean.
As a long-time Atlantic Fleet
sailor and native Missourian,
Jack had a number of surpris-
es in store for him and his
family as he traveled west to
report to NOTS. He relates his
experience in w 0 r d s familiar
to many China Lakers.
"As we drove west through
Arizona on our way out here,
we didn't quite know what to
make of things as the country
became more and more 1ike
desert, and we began to see
the sand blowing," he recalls.
"It didn't take long for us
to come to like living here,"
he says. "The people are
friendly and easy to get along
with, and we visit around of-
ten with our neighbors, most of
them civilians.
"In fact, NOTS has the best
Navy-civilian relations of any
Station I've seen - I suppose
because it needs such close co-
operation and joint effort."
Jack and his wife Lin d a
make their home in the Des-
ert Park section of Ridgecrest,
adjoining the S tat ion, with
their three-year old son Mark.
They are active in community
affairs and often attend activ-
ities and meetings at the Com·
munity Center.
With five years and two
months of Navy service ·alrea·
dy behind him, Jack's plans
are firm to make it his career.
He also plans to add more ac-
ademic schooling to the list of
