Virgil F. Manke
Virgil F. Manke, a lifelong resi-
dent of Shelton, died of cancer
Wednesday, October 25 at Mason
General Hospital, He was 65.
With his brother, Chuck Man-
ke, he owned Manke Lumber
Company,
He was born January 31, 1935,
in Shelton to Elmer and Dorothy
(Filler) Manke.
He married Joan Kriener on
May 5, 1956.
Manke Lumber Company was
founded in 1953 by Elmer Manke
and his sons, Virgil and Chuck.
The business started with a small
mill the three men built and oper»
ated at Lake Cushman for two
years.
Between 1955 and 1965, they
operated a portable mill that cut
mostly state timben Virgil Manke
was the sawyer and timber buyer
for the company, which grew to
employ more than 500 workers
with operations in Shelton, Taco-
ma and Sumner.
During the past 40 years, Mr.
Manke accumulated more than
40,000 acres of land and timber
for the family business.
He loved the land and the
great outdoors, and remained ac-
tive in the business until his
death. He loved hunting and fish»
ing from the time he was a youth
and had lodges in Alaska and
Montana.
He was preceded in death by a
brother, Larry Manke
Survivors include his wife,
Joan Manke of Shelton; sons
Scott J. Manke of Olympia and
Matthew D. Manke of Allyn;
daughters Kristie A. Bissel of Bel—
levue and Kari M. Lanphear of
Shelton; brothers Chuck Manke
of Olympia, Jim Manke of Taco—
ma and Ray Manke of Tacoma;
sisters Bunny Orr of Shelton,
Judy Byme of Kennewick and Ar-
lene Bac of Holly; and eight
grandchildren.
A memorial service was held
Monday, October 30, at Faith
Lutheran Church in Shelton. Bu~
rial was at Shelton Memorial
Park.
